Human-IT Laptop Program: Low-Cost and Free-Request Options

The Human-I-T Laptop Program is not a government laptop benefit. Human-I-T is a nonprofit technology organization. Anyone can shop its refurbished-device store, while qualifying households can unlock deeper discounts. It also accepts individual requests for free or heavily subsidized devices when need and available inventory allow.

Most Human-I-T laptops are low-cost, not free. A separate free-device request exists, but Human-I-T says requests exceed supply and selection depends on need and current device availability.

Who can shop? Anyone can buy from the store

Income verification is not required for ordinary guest or standard-store purchases.

Who gets deeper discounts? Income-qualified Gold members

Qualifying benefits or household income can unlock additional device discounts and services.

Are free laptops guaranteed? No — requests are need-based

Free-device requests are reviewed against need and available device supply.

Two different routes

Do not mix the store with the free-device request.

Human-I-T currently has a predictable low-cost store route and a separate need-based request path. Understanding the difference prevents a discounted laptop from being described as a guaranteed free laptop.

Main route

Affordable laptops

Human-I-T sells new and refurbished laptops and other devices. Everyone can shop, but verified Gold members receive deeper discounts. Current store pricing changes with inventory, so the device and final price should be checked before ordering.

Best for: someone who needs a more predictable way to obtain a lower-cost device instead of waiting for a donation.
Limited route

Free-device requests

Human-I-T also lets individuals request free or heavily subsidized technology. The organization says it reviews each request, prioritizes based on need, and cannot guarantee a device because requests exceed available supply.

Best for: people facing serious financial hardship, homelessness, disaster loss, or another situation that puts technology out of reach.
Gold Membership

Who qualifies for deeper discounts?

Human-I-T currently uses two main eligibility routes: participation in an accepted assistance program or household income at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level.

Qualifying assistance

One program is enough

Current examples include SNAP/EBT, Medicaid, Social Security benefits, Section 8, TANF, WIC, National School Lunch Program, Lifeline, energy assistance, VA benefits, need-based financial aid, Head Start, and General Assistance.

SNAP EBT eligibility route →

Household income

Alternative route

If you are not enrolled in an accepted assistance program, Human-I-T currently allows qualification when gross household income is at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level.

Verification period

15 months

Human-I-T says verified eligibility remains active for 15 months. When it expires, a new qualifying document is needed to continue receiving Gold-member benefits.

Eligibility documents

One current document can be enough.

Human-I-T’s current rules ask for one qualifying benefit or income document. The document must show the name of someone in the household. For assistance-program enrollment, it must generally be dated within the last six months and show active benefits.

01
Benefit award or renewal letter

Useful for accepted programs such as SNAP, Medicaid, Social Security, housing assistance, or other qualifying benefits.

02
Benefit statement

Must be current under Human-I-T’s documentation rules and identify the qualifying household member.

03
Income documentation

Examples include a recent tax return, Social Security benefit statement, VA benefit statement, or retirement/pension statement.

!
Cards and pay stubs

Human-I-T currently says member/enrollment cards alone are not accepted, and its eligibility page says pay stubs are not accepted for this verification route.

Application process

How to use Human-I-T

Choose the route first. The store and the free-device request solve different problems.

01

Decide between low-cost and free-request

If you can afford a discounted refurbished device, the store gives you a more predictable purchase path. If technology is financially out of reach, consider the separate free-device request.

02

Verify Gold eligibility if you want deeper discounts

Use one accepted benefit document or qualifying income document. Human-I-T says you upload one document during verification.

03

Create the appropriate account or request

For discounted technology, create a Human-I-T account and complete Gold verification. For a free-device request, explain your situation and how technology would help.

04

Check the actual device terms

For store purchases, review the current model, specifications, condition, warranty, shipping and final price. For free requests, wait for Human-I-T to determine whether it can match your need with available resources.

Before you apply

Three things not to assume

Human-I-T is a real nonprofit provider, but its programs still have distinct eligibility, inventory, and selection rules.

!

Gold does not mean free

Gold Membership unlocks deeper discounts and eligible services. It does not turn every laptop in the store into a no-cost device.

!

A free request is not guaranteed

Human-I-T says it prioritizes requests based on need and current device availability. Submitting a request does not guarantee selection.

!

Benefit cards may not prove eligibility

Use the award, renewal, benefit, or income document Human-I-T requests rather than assuming an EBT or Medicaid card alone will be accepted.

Official route

Need a no-cost device? Use Human-I-T’s request page.

The free-device request is the correct Human-I-T route for individuals whose circumstances put technology out of reach. Human-I-T reviews the request and contacts selected applicants when it can match them with available resources.
